The site was completely redesigned in the style of a simple civic green with open lawns, flowerbeds and trees. Randall Thorp took the project through from start to finish in nine months, including consulting local people and other community stakeholders, developing the vision and drawing up detailed plans, obtaining the necessary formal consents for the project, which lies within a conservation area and contains a listed building, and providing the information the Diocese of Manchester needed to grant a Church Faculty more speedily than usual. The work was completed on site and met the time requirements of European Regional Development Funding.
The area now makes a positive contribution to the townscape of Ashton, forming an attractive gateway clearly visible from passing cars as well as a successful public open space for local residents and pedestrians.
